Things that go Bump in the day...

Took a few attempts but got Bump working from my husband's iPhone to my iPad, once I figured out I needed to have him loaded as a contact in my iPad (you will probably have your contacts loaded already if you are using an iPhone). The photos he "bumped" across to me were easily uploaded directly to Facebook, along with my first Instagram pic. I was a little disappointed in Instagram, somehow I was expecting a wider variety of special photographic effects, but it does make it very easy to upload and share photos.
An app I do like is Cool Wallpapers HD, have a look, they have some amazing photos. Search books and find the candle-lit old bookshelves complete with wooden ladders to be transported to another world...

Apps to go

Whiled away a few hours looking at UK travel apps for our forthcoming trip this afternoon. I like the London app with its quick lessons in history and especially language, right down to explaining that the expression "a sandwich short of a picnic" has nothing to do with food. Tourist attractions are searchable and linked to their location on a map - no more collecting dozens of sightseeing pamphlets on our travels. Journey Pro is a great app for planning your travel by rail, tram and river within London, with real-time timetable and travel information such as line closures or works. United Kingdom by Triposo looks promising, with plenty of travel information for destinations throughout Britain, but I gave up on Trip Advisors City Guides as the London guide was taking forever to load. Enjoy England looks interesting, with one click access to websites, directions (not surprisingly there are no driving directions from my current location) and phone access (if downloaded to your phone). With apps and books all loaded to my iPad, gone are the days of toting heavy tomes across the world.

Animoto magic

Checked out a few of the websites we talked about in class last week tonight and then created my first Animoto video, viewable here (hopefully!) http://animoto.com/play/ShKevDEa29aF0xwhrpV3Zg#

eBooks, eAsy!

Browsed Amazon tonight for books to download to my iPad via the Kindle app. It was actually remarkably easy. I like how you can download a free sample of a book to try before you buy, usually the first chapter or so - the equivalent of being able to flick through a hard copy I guess. There are also entire books available free (besides the Project Gutenberg titles that is). If you like romance have a look at A Family Affair by Mary Campisi and download it for nothing!

When IT was called EDP

Aha! Discovered how to load my own background photo - yay! It's a very old photo from back in the days of the mainframe computer which took up a whole room with its bank of CPUs, disk drives the size of washing machines, printers larger than today's refigerators and reel-to-reel tape drives!
IT in the 70s! Those round things at the back are disks, and the piece of equipment on the left is a card reader. You can just see the control terminal for the computer on the right.

Moved to a new computer lab today to use iTunes - so much nicer than our usual lab, with a beautiful picture window at the end. Worth enrolling in the Diploma just to enjoy this room next year! Unfortunately for some reason the Chisholm network wouldn't let me log on to wifi with my iPod or iPad so that was frustrating until IT added me to the wifi network.
